Linda Crane Memorial Lecture AwardHISTORY:Dr. Linda Crane was a dedicated member of the profession of physical therapy since 1970, and was someone who helped to create a significant part of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section’s history. She was one of the first three APTA board certified clinical specialists in cardiopulmonary physical therapy (awarded in 1985), and was awarded the Lucy Blair Service Award for distinguished service to the profession in 1992. In the early years of the Cardiopulmonary Section she served as Program Chair, Chairman of the Section (1982-86), and Delegate to the House of Delegates. Linda’s clinical practice specialty was in the area of pediatric cardiopulmonary physical therapy, and her dissertation for her doctoral degree in Exercise Physiology was entitled “The relationship of degree of kyphosis, bone density and activity history to pulmonary function in postmenopausal women with osteopenia.” Dr. Crane was a dedicated educator as well, and served on the faculties of University of Connecticut, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of New England, and the University of Miami. Her efforts in the area of education are best known and recognized for the document “Entry Level Competencies in Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy.” Dr. Linda Crane died on March 24, 1999 after a lengthy battle with metastatic breast cancer. PURPOSE:To acknowledge an individual who has made outstanding and enduring contributions to the practice of physical therapy as exemplified in the professional career of Linda Crane. ELEGIBILITY: Nominees for the award must: 1.be a member of the APTA; 2.be a member of the Academy of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy; 3.have demonstrated excellence/expertise in either clinical practice, academic practice, or in area of research; 4.have demonstrated contributions to the Association through State, Academy, or National involvement; and 5.NOT be a member of the Awards Committee. Members of the Awards Committee are responsible for reviewing nominations, recommending recipients, or awarding an award are not eligible for nomination or consideration for this award. SELECTION CRITERIA: 1.Quality and quantity of contributions to the association. 2.Quality and quantity of contributions to the Academy Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy. 3.Effect on shape, scope, and quality of physical therapy practice in cardiovascular and/or pulmonary PT. 4.Effect on other physical therapists’ ability to practice. PROCEDURE FOR NOMINATION: 1.Nominations may be submitted by physical therapists or physical therapist assistants, but the nominee must be a member of the Academy of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy. 2.Nominations must be submitted through the Academy’s web site). 3.The nominator should also include letters of support for the nomination from two colleagues. 4.Once the nomination form is received by the committee, the committee will send the nominee a letter notifying the person they have been nominated. 5. The nominee sends to the committee: a recent curriculum vitae and possible topics they would consider presenting if selected for this award. PROCEDURE FOR REVIEW: 1.Awards Committee will review the nominations and recommend a recipient to the Executive Board of the Academy for final approval by the CSM meeting, one year prior to the CSM the individual will be giving the honorary lecture. 2.Decision of the Executive Board pertaining to selection of the awardee will be final and reasons for decision will not be disclosed. 3.The committee to review the nominations and recommend a recipient shall consist of the Academy’s Vice President(who will act as Chair of the Committee), the Chair of the Nominating Committee, and the previous Linda Crane Award recipient. 4. ALL NOMINATIONS HAVE AN OCTOBER 1ST DEADLINE. NATURE OF AWARD: 1.The recipient will receive a commemorative plaque which will be presented at the lecture ceremony. 2.The Linda Crane Lecture speech (or developed into an article) will be published in the Cardiopulmonary PhysicalTherapy Journal immediately following the lecture.
